In early times, as we human beings started populating the world every continent — we began to build civilizations. As more interactions with each other grew, the need to invent fun ways to kill our spare time evolved into the sports that we play today. The earliest sport that has been recorded in history is The Olympic Games back in 760 B.C, where various took place like boxing, wrestling, chariot racing, running, and much more. Back then, the games were done to honor their god Zeus, but now we do sports for ourselves.
There is a reason why physical education is part of a school’s curriculum apart from just hitting the books. As early as our kindergarten years, we were encouraged to go for the outdoor play. Being out of your room and out in nature has been shown in numerous studies to be quite beneficial. Parenting forums advise less screen time and more play time, as it helps with a child’s confidence, competitive spirit, and socialization skills.
Besides the physical activities, we also find other ways to make our lives more interesting. Various activities like reading, video games, painting, and gardening are just a few that people like to do in their free time.
Ready, Set, Go!
Everywhere in the world, there is a sport that was invented. Some require groups, a pair, or an individual. Some have tools, while others don’t. What is the one thing in common in the whole nature of the activity? It is all about the competition. Some people have realized that a sport can be their calling, which is why athletes have dedicated their lives to it. Universities also uphold the varsity athletes in a positive light — providing scholarships for those who are gifted in a specific sport. In return, the students get to represent the school when there are national tournaments.
The health benefits are quite plentiful for those who engage in sports — not only do people become more physically fit, but they also have a boosted self-esteem. Athletes use sports as a way to reduce the stress in their daily lives. By having a goal to win the game, you can apply this to any challenge that comes to you.
Another thing about sports is that it brings people together. Die-hard fans buy merchandise, watch the game on TV, or attend the tournaments. We love to root for a team and cheer on when they win. The most famous people in the world are athletes who have worked hard to get where they are now. As the amazing tennis player Serena Williams once said, “With a defeat, when you lose, you get up, you make it better, you try again. That’s what I do in life, when I get down, when I get sick, I don’t want to just stop. I keep going and I try to do more. Everyone always says never give up but you really have to take that to heart and really do never definitely give up. Keep trying.”
A Leisurely Life
Everybody has a hobby, something to get your mind off the responsibilities. We are inclined to like an activity that sparks joy. Brave souls use their passions and interests to pursue it, by sharing it to the world as a passion project. A person who discovers their love of calligraphy takes time to master the skill, then start a postcard business. Or those who love to take videos end up creating a vlogging channel on Youtube.
There are also people who are glued to a fandom, so they go to conventions, collect toys, and binge watch or read the source material to their liking. This is just one example of a person who genuinely just wants to have fun. Other kinds of leisure could be productive, one that already applies to your daily activities like cooking, grocery shopping, or driving.
But for those who want to try something new, sometimes it is not a snap decision to go after what you want, many barriers like lacking the time, energy, or funds to support your hobbies can be troublesome. But there is a reason why school extracurricular activities, weekends, and summer vacations exist — so that a person can avoid a burn out. Taking a break is very essential for our overall well-being. In fact, studies have shown that taking time for yourself and doing things that you want to do is standard to boost one’s creativity and efficiency.
The bottom line is, we need to value the free time to have a fulfilling life.
A Part of A Person’s Individuality
In high school, there are cliques when you walk into the cafeteria. It is a stereotype but it also rings true. Even when you get to know the people in the company you work in, there is a person you can pinpoint to the sporty, the dancer, the writer, and more.
The point is, having an interest gives a person a defining factor about them. A specialized interest shows that others can come to you when they want to know more about it and vice versa.
